Our Story

Budapest Explorers was founded in 2017 with the aim to create guided tours that we'd also enjoy. We wanted honest, fun, historically correct tours where the guides are well-educated, prepared and enthusiastic. Where one can get to know how life is, what are the current events and what is in the minds of the people.

Having worked as a cruise-, tour manager and local guide for 7 years, Daniel had tried most ways of guiding in Budapest (big bus, car, minivan, bike, e-bike, segway, scooter) and thinks that the best way of showing the the city is on foot, in small groups.

We offer small group (max. 10 guests) walking tours in English language, at times using public transportation. Our reason for this is to be close to the locals, to show the sites in the best possible way and to be green. On our private tours we can arrange private transportation (car, minivan, bus, ship etc.) and we've also arranged tours with German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese etc. speaking guides.

In our opinion Budapest is too big of a city and too rich in its sights and heritage to try to show it on one tour.

To get a general overview of Budapest we recommend:

While our thematic tours are also popular:

Until January 2021 we've had over 3500 guests traveling with us and we've received 1128 reviews and our tours are rated on average as 4,92 / 5 stars.

Meet the Team

Dániel Draskóczy

Co- Founder, Guide

Szia! :) My name is Daniel, and I've been a tour guide since 2011. I hold degrees in history and international relations. I was born and raised in Hungary and after having lived in 3 countries and guided groups in 19, I decided to settle down and focus on Budapest. I'm a proud husband and a father of 2. Besides managing Budapest Explorers I am also a political activist.

I aim to show you the real Budapest: from history and cultural background to the everyday lives of people: the good, the bad - and if you want to hear - the ugly. Get ready for an honest, in-depth experience of Budapest!

My hobbies include travelling, writing (check out our blog!), reading and watching movies.

Gábor (Gabriel)

Guide

Hello! My name is Gábor and I might be the person meeting you and showing you around in Budapest. I grew up in the countryside, in the southeast corner of Hungary, and nothing made my young self more excited than to pay a visit to the capital: Budapest. My mom being a geography teacher, I've always had my walls covered with colorful maps and pictures of legendary places to explore. (It runs in the family.)

And as soon as I got my diploma in human geography and tourism, I moved to the capital and I have become an explorer – I like to think of myself as one. And becoming a tour guide in 2015 made it possible for me to share my discoveries. Whether it’s sunny or rainy outside, I will be there by your side, exploring both the main and also the hidden parts of the Hungarian capital. I look forward to meeting you, getting to know you and showing you Budapest.

Maggie

Guide

Hi there! My original name might be too difficult to pronounce and remember (Małgorzata / Gosia) so I usually go by Maggie. After having received my Masters diploma from archaeology, I chose Budapest as my new hometown: in 2011.

Since the beginning I’ve been fascinated with the sites, culture and history of the Hungarian capital.

Having become a licensed guide in Budapest and Hungary made it possible for me to share my passion and be able to reveal the gems of the city on and off the beaten path.

Besides guiding, my passions include traveling, photographing and managing my own and Budapest Explorers’s Instagram account. Looking forward to meeting you!

Noémi

Guide

Hi, my name is Noémi, and I am a tour guide in Budapest. Although I was born in Budapest, I have lived in several places in Hungary. I moved to Budapest to continue my studies and I have never regretted it since. Here you will find all the fun, cultural beauty and a really long history in one place.

I speak French as well as English. I've been a singer and an actor, but my theater ended up being the city of Budapest. I am happy to share with you the stories that I heard from my parents and grandparents as a child.

In case you can't find me here, I'm probably waiting at the airport to begin a new adventure.

Judit

Guide

Hi there! My name is Judit, and I'm a tour guide in Budapest and Hungary since 2011. I was born in a small town, HódmezÅ‘vásárhely (good luck pronouncing it!), but I fell in love with the capital the moment I moved here.

I'm also a part-time Spanish teacher, so I do tours in English and Spanish as well, occasionally in Portuguese. I'm passionate about food, history, Art Nouveau, and nature, and I love showing you the big picture, how past and present are intertwined. I'm deeply interested in social and environmental issues.

In my free time I dance flamenco, I do orienteering, I travel, hike, or cook.

I can't wait to have you on my tour!

Gergely (Greg)

Guide

My name is Gergely in Hungarian, but it's much easier if you just call me Greg! :)

I've born in the downtown of Buda in an intellectual family, and I have to admit that my family background and upbringing undoubtedly led to my present profession: tour guiding. I took the exam in 2006 and since then I'm active in the tourism biz either as a conventional tour guide in the city or an adventurous outdoor guide (hiking, canoeing, rafting, climbing etc.).

Beside my deep love and passion towards my hometown my "weakness" is definitely honesty so parallel all the useful information/knowledge I wish to share with you the true life of my nation as well, therefore I happily answer any kind of questions!

So let's walk together and explore the past and present of Hungary!

Our Participant's Reviews

“Daniel was enthausiastic and knew everything about Hungarian history. He mixed fun anecdotes about his own family's past with contemporary political developments, making the tour very interesting and enjoyable. We would very much recommend everyone who is interested in Hungarian history - and especially the communist time - to take this tour..”

Robert, New York

"Malgorzata (Maggie) was a fantastic guide - we learned so much about Hungarian history and its people in our tour of the castle. She made sure we saw all the main sites and provided a ton of information that we wouldn’t have gotten by just walking around ourselves."

Sarah, Canada

"Really informative and interesting tour. Greg’s stories were the best part. His personal anecdotes gave me an insight of daily life under communism. He stopped at a number of locations that brought to reality what actually happened to everyday Hungarians. He’s very knowledgeable and speaks openly."

Alfred, Georgia

“We go on tours in every city we visit, and we all agreed this was the best one we’ve ever been on. Judit was incredible; extremely knowledgeable, conversational, approachable, professional, and funny. She shared lots of helpful anecdotes from her own family history that really brought the tour to life. This tour was the highlight of our trip to Budapest and maybe even of our entire trip to Europe.“
